My path

I was born in Bogotá, but it was in Barrancabermeja, where I spent my teenage years, that I discovered my thing was processes, efficiency and organization.

I come from a hard-working family. My mother studied and worked at the same time, which made me very independent from a young age. I first studied at SENA because money was short, and with effort and commitment I kept opening my own way.

I chased scholarships, cycled long distances to work and then to class, and bought my first motorbike on my own. It was not an easy road, but it is one I am deeply proud of.

I have always looked for solutions rather than complaints. I would rather learn than give up, and listen before I argue. I am building a stronger version of myself, personally and professionally.

An engineer’s paths

  1. Illustration of Laura cycling to the office

From the bicycle to the office

There was a time when I cycled 30 minutes to get to my job at Fedagro, then went straight on to university. No car, no motorbike, but plenty of drive. The real engine is inside: it is measured in determination, not horsepower.

  2. Illustration of Laura studying at night

    Studying without money

I started at SENA not knowing whether I could afford to continue, and I finished a university degree. I chased scholarships and studied cold, hungry and tired. The most valuable part was not the diploma but realizing what I can do when I have a clear purpose.

  3. Illustration of the step from SENA to university

    From SENA to engineering

I began with technical training and that is where I found my passion. Then I moved on to public university, with effort and faith. Life does not always give you the most direct road, but it gives you the one that makes you strongest.

  4. Illustration of Laura learning at her first job

Not afraid to learn from scratch

When I started my first job there was a lot I did not know, but not knowing never froze me. I asked for help, wrote everything down, and learned by watching and practicing. Sometimes the greatest talent is the attitude to learn it all.

  5. Illustration of Laura organizing her home

Efficiency is not just for the office

I learned to be efficient in life: with money, time and energy. Sometimes the best logistics happen at home, organizing a little to achieve a lot. Engineering is something you live, too.

  6. Illustration of Laura speaking calmly in a meeting

I don’t need to shout to be heard

I am a calm person. I don’t shout and I don’t impose, but that doesn’t mean I have no voice. Respect and clarity build authority too. Firmness doesn’t always need volume.

  7. Illustration of Laura calmly setting boundaries

Being kind is not being weak

I was always the one who said yes, who understood, put up with things and kept quiet. Over the years, thanks to my husband, close friends and my parents, I learned that setting boundaries is not rude: it is being fair to myself.

  8. Illustration of Laura as a girl doing her homework alone

Independence is not always a choice

I learned to be independent as a child because circumstances demanded it. My mother worked and studied, so I learned to solve my problems on my own. Today I am grateful for that independence, even when it weighed on me. It shaped me quietly.

  9. Illustration of Laura with her first motorbike

My first motorbike, my first big step

I bought it with borrowed money, but it was a huge victory. The motorbike was my symbol of freedom and autonomy, of going further without depending on anyone. Every time I ride it, I remember where I come from.

  10. Illustration of Laura resting

Taking care of myself is a priority too

It took me a while to understand that life is not only work or meeting other people’s expectations. I also need rest and to look after my mental health. I am not a production machine: I am a person who deserves care too, starting with my own.

  11. Illustration of Laura with her partner

My life partner, my quiet teacher

For almost three years I have been with someone who taught me to set boundaries, to say “no” without guilt, and that being kind doesn’t mean letting people walk over you. His love made me stronger, clearer and freer.

  12. Illustration of Laura looking ahead

Not everything that hurts is bad

Some disappointments at work, people who took advantage, paths that didn’t work out... all of that also brought me here. Pain is not always defeat; sometimes it is a push, momentum, transformation.

  13. Illustration of a grateful Laura

    Gratitude is my starting point

I don’t have everything I want, but I deeply value everything I have: every scholarship, every job, every person who lent me a hand. Gratitude is a way to grow.
